Programme note — Angels’ Song (Mark Argent)

This piece is a brief exploration of the moment in John's gospel, where Mary Magdelene, overwhelmed with grief, encounters an angel at the empty tomb of Jesus. In her pain she does not realise that Jesus is risen, even when she sees him.

The music follows in the footsteps of the twelfth century composer Leonin, who explored this territory in a piece based on the plainsong “sedit angelus ad sepulchrum domini” (which translates as “the angel sat at the tomb of the Lord”). This plainsong fragment recurs throughout Angels’ song, interspersed with modern words and music.
