The starting point for this piece was some time in the gardens of Campion House, the home of the Osterley Retreat Centre in West London. The chattering of birds in the trees and the profusion of flowers on a bright spring morning fired my imagination.
The piece is cast as four linked sections. The material for the opening section is based on the fragments of birdsong which made their way into my sketchbook that morning, and it lies in the background for the rest of the suite, just as the birdsong continued as my attention wandered to the plants and the sky that morning.
The clavichord offers a variety of possibilities. On the one hand its quietness makes it appropriate for the expression of a private walk in a garden. At the same time, it's sound ranges from a warm sustained vibrato to dry staccato effects and the almost-plucked sound of accacciaturas. The ideas for this suite were explored on a small fretted German clavichord made by J. H. Gräbner the younger in 1761.
